You don't strictly need an airstone as long as your filter causes plenty of surface movement on the water. If you have plants, I think you might benefit from one. Someone who knows better than me could hopefully advise you but with planted tanks its a good idea to have one on at night, to do with CO2 absorbtion I think. Not very clued up about that but certainly, for a tank with no plants and plenty of surface movement its not a must. They do look nice though! ;)

might be worth doing a bit of reasearch into the CO2 and O2 exchange, sorry I can't be more help on this but I know its to do with more O2 being absorbed and therefore more CO2 being released at night when its dark so its worth having extra O2 then but this is really only for heavily plnted tanks... :)

thanks for that peediepixie.

any other suggestions ?

i only have airstones in my tank for looks and my goldfish likes swimming in the bubbles. the tank is planted so i got the smallest stone possible.

as long as their is surface agitation you will not need a airstone

i've just bought an airpump for my tank although not essential they certainly will not do any harm, the fish seem to like the bubbles and it keeps your tank well oxygenated. They are also very decorative. if you are still thinking of getting one i would recommend rena as they are probably the most silent.
