I AM CURRREMTLY RUNNING A FLUVAL 404 ON MY 55 GALLON... I ALSO HAVE AN AIR STONE WHICH IMO IS ANNOYING THE FISH....DO U THINK THE AIRSTONE IS NECESSARY IN MY TANK CAUSE I DONT LIKE IT I AND I DONT THINK THE FISH DO EITHER...

well it keeps the surface of the water moving.. and the tank does need a source of airation do you have anything else that adds to airation? What fish do you have?

ITS A GROW OUT TANK I CURRENTLY HAVE 4 1 INCH FRONTOSA, 2 YELLOW LABS, AND 2 CLOWN LOACHES.... I PLAN ON GETTING 2 LELEUPI IN A WEEK OR 2...

There is something wrong with your capslock ;)

Probably your fishes don't even realize if there is a "airstone" or not. But keep it in there. Like Henry wrote, airstone+pump keep water moving from bottom to surface. On surface happens gas-changing, water absorbs air (02). And water is well oxygenated - hopefully. If you take that stone+pump away, water probably doesn't move so well and on bottom there may be less oxygen than uper part. Those airbubbles also help you to keep "that film" away from water surface - when those bubbles explode, they break up that "bacteria/greas film" too and the water surface will be clear. If it's not clear, then oxygen cannot dissolve water so well.

All that is required to keep the tank well aeriated is movement of the surface of the water, if your filter provides this then the airstone is unnessesary.
Airstones are only really needed if you are keeping fish that like minimal surface movement like bettas and gouramis or if the tank is undergoing treatment with a medication which may cause oxygen levels to drop, other than this all they are is a attractive/unattractive decoration.

Place the output nozzle of the Fluval at the very top of the water, just below the surface. This will create enough water movement that you don't need the airstone. I don't like them myself and only use them when I"m cycling a tank or running a sponge filter.

an air stone isn't needed if u setup ur filter outlets and inlets right!
The outlet of ur filter will move the water serface enought to aranate the water. if ur fish come to the setface for air then u might want to raise the outlet or use a spray bar.

whats a spray bar?
Canister filters use them as an "rod-like" attachment that water comes out of timy holes to agitate the surface of the water for oxygen exchange.
