Sorry if this is a silly question...

As I am pumping co2 into my tank do I still need to use my air pump?

Like I said sorry if this is obvious

From my understanding having a air pump alongside CO2 is counterproductive as it breaks the surface of the water ... you want the CO2 to stay in the water as long as possible

I'd wait for someone more experienced to answer though ... but I think I'm right :/

to be honest, most people believe airpumps pumps oxygen into the tank - this is not true - oxygen is created at surface level by disruption, such as the outflow from
your filter creating breaks in the surface, now that will create oxygen.

so, the answer is nope :)

Well you have saved me a few quid because the one I have is getting a little noisy and I was going to get a new one....Thanks for the help

if you inject CO2 then running an airstone will create more surface agitation so the CO2 will gas off quicker.

If you do not inject CO2 then running an airstone will keep the CO2 levels at around 6-8ppm.

Aaron that just confused me

Do I keep the air pump??

I am using co2 at about 2 bubbles per second

Thanks for the advice

I have read that for the sake of the fish some surface turbulence is needed when you inject Co2. There is more than 1 way to create surface turbulence. I use a powerhead.

get rid of the air pump then lol. Just raise the filter so it creates a small ripple if need be.

Thanks Aaron

Thats pretty much how I have it set now...

I was going to nip to ASDA and buy a timer and have the air pump running during the wee dark hours...but if you think its best I will lose it altogether.

Thanks again

you dont really need an airpump if you think its putting oxygen into the water, your outlet pipe from you filter, hitting the surface causing disruption will.

that said, some people will have an airpump, although its normally one that packs a punch capable of breaking the surface, again causing breaks. again
as long as your filters outlet is hitting the waters surface causing breaks, you dont need an airpump.

I myself have a very large one....airpump that is...behave! which puts out 4000ltrs/hour...which is a lot, my lfs has a smaller one for their tanks !

heres the vid of my tank

smoothy - did you see the crazy frog at the end, he is mad, when feeding, he will swim over and up to you and will sit in your hand, whilst you stroke his back lol, then he takes a prawn and buggers off lol

That is a strange but beautiful mixture fish and frog you have there!!

it is a very strange mix - maybe one that shouldnt work, but does. only trouble is, you dont realise how big the fish get being in large tank
