Air Pump Question?

Does the air pump really need to be placed above the water level of the tank, I heard this today and it was something which I had never heard of before, not sure where i would put it above though :/
 
You can place them below as long as you use a check valve. The reason they tell you to place it above is so water can't siphon down the airline and damage your air pump. Check valves are basically one way valves.
