hi, has anyone got one of those air powred filters that go inside the tank? Are they any good and do you need a really powerfull pump, because i want to replace my juwel one because it is too big and ugly  !Would it work properley in a 16 gallon ( 70 litres) tank

im not sure what you mean by air powered, could you explain a lil ?

if by air powered you mean UGF then don't bother, get yourself an external! sad to say it is old tech now, internals have come a long way since UGF's were all the rage.

I think he means the sponge filters where you need an air pump, like they have in bare bottomed tank for Discus.

I use both internal UG and external electric filters, plus sponge filters in the fry tanks and find that they all have some recommendations, but in a planted tank an electric internal or external filter is better, the sponge filters will clog up too fast in a planted tank.

Air powered filters work but get dirty fairly quickly. I use them as extra filters in my tanks (or as the only filter in fry tanks) and have to clean them just about every week. They also require you to do more frequent water changes on the tanks. They simply can't compete with power filters in filtration quality. They are an alternative but shouldn't be the first choice for your average tank just for specialty tanks like breeding or fry care.

yes the box filter is what i mean.Is there any other alternative i just really want my filter out it takes up too much room and all other internal filters i have seen are too big apart from the elite stingray 15 but my tank is 15.4 litres and that only does 15 litres.

why not get a hang-on-back marineland penguin bio-wheel power filter?

Depending on how much air you run through them they can compete with power filters. The problem is finding a suitable air pump for one or two tanks. Most lfs won't carry a small linear pump, the smallest is about $70 online. This will run about 6 tanks with enough air to keep it as clean as a power filter. It's a shame someone doesn't sell a decent pump to fill the gap between the small linears & the larger diaphram pumps.

For a 15 liter tank a small box filter will work, if you find the right pump.
