Hi all,
Got myself a new set up today, I've had tanks in the past but bought a new one today for the first time in over 10 years!
Anyway, I've tried fine black gravel as my substrate and I've got lots of air bubbles on it and small patches of it floating on the top.
I did rinse it briefly but the bag stated minimal rinsing was required as they had allready done so.

Any ideas? Thanks

It should go away with time :) are you aware of the nitrogen cycle?

I have had pea gravel do the same thing, it will clear up in a short while. The air bubbles will go away. More importantly how are you planning on cycling your tank?

Agree with others, not a problem. There are two causes, and both likely apply here.

Air will be trapped in the rinsed gravel you put in the tank, and then fill with water. These bubbles you can easily releast by gently stirring the substrate. I always do this in new tanks to get rid of the air before I add fish. Not that it is particularly harmful, but it is better to resolve it.

The other cause is dissolved CO2 in the tap water. This you may see at any or every water change too, depending upon the source water CO2 content. Also nothing to worry about. If you have live plants, this excess of CO2 can actually benefit them.

Cheers for the replies people - i have disturbed it and 90% of it has now gone.
I've got water treatment chemical that I'm putting in for the next 3 days to help the water and then my first fish next week, probably zebra danios

It will take longer than that to cycle the tank. Read this article. Feel free to ask questions
