Strange, seems that my female platty is pregnant again. She is fighting Ick along with her tank mates. I know for a fact that both platties are female...but don't know about my tetras..... so how did she get pregnant. Um, I didn't think egglayers mix bred with livebearers. If she is pregnant...how? I mean... Oh I'm lost. lol. I've already got fry in main tank now, I can't be taking care of them all and I don't have food for them. LFS will not take them.

grr. I know both platties fins look the same, female. I thought the tetras were female but could not be sure yet. AHHHHHHH I wanna run away, I'm confused and I have ick infested pregnant fish in a 10 gal tank! :fish:

well they sell chemicals for ic but i rely can't explain ur platty problem. iv never had plattys so i wouldn't be able to tell the differance between male and female. but if ur compleately sure that they are both feamale then perhaps plattys r like guppys. maybe they can carry more than one batch of sperm from a male they met many months before. once again iv never had plattys b4 and definately am not an expert. if ur tank is infested with ic then the fry from ur platty will probably die before birth because ur platty is at a lack of energy from fighting ic. i would change out half of the water and treat the ic with chemicals so when ur frish does give birth, she will not die from exhaustion.

Oh she is being treated already with Rid Ick. I wanted to do things right, and they've been treated with medication for 4 days, and salt for 1st day till I got meds. Anyway, she is just getting to seem to feel better. For the last 3 days she's been very sick, laying at bottom of tank near dead at night. And now today she is rather active, though they all still have ick that I can see, she is doing rather good. So I'm thinking she'll be fine, but may lose the fry since due to the ick or medication. I don't need more babies... really. Not yet, not till I can get a large tank and use 10 gal as breeding tank. lol . I just can't figure out how she got pregnant, and I'm fairly sure she is, if she is, she'll have the babies in next few days, very heavy right now. And I did a double check, both are Definatly female.

My head is spinning. Last time, about a week ago, I bring her home, to find she had a cut and fungus and was pregnant. Bad water at the lfs. Anyway, I cure her of the fungus, then she has babies, and gets ick the same night, along with all the other fish. Surprised I havn't lost any of them with all this stuff. *bangs head on desk* lol

well good luck with that. if she gives birth this will probably be her last time if there is no other males. ik is rely hard to get rid of and userally is contracted when u bring new fish to a tank from another infected tank. chemicals to treat ik will userally kill off most young fry so dont be surrprised if they begin to dissapear. gl

Livebearer females have the ability to store the male sperm for up to eight batches of fry. So she could have been fertilized before you bought her and could have many maor batches of fry even though there is no male present. HTH :)
