hey ppl,
i was wondering if some freshwater shrimp such as the bamboo and the giant indonesian fan shrimp are like crayfish in the sense that there biggest mortallity rate is due to other crayfosh killing them are shrimp alike???????

Virtually all the shrimps get together with two exceptions. Fan shrimps (Atys and Atyopsis spp.) shrimps can be territorial, and shouldn't be overcrowded. Long-arm shrimps (Macrobrachium spp.) are beyond merely territorial, and will actively fight, doing damage in the process. They are also piscivorous, so aren't a good choice for the community tank anyway.

As far as I known, everything else -- Neocaridina, Caridina, Palemon, etc -- are sociable and do best in groups.

In short, if it is small, it's likely sociable, if it's big, then likely territorial.

Cheers,

Neale

No, that's not what usualy kills them. In fact, most shrimp are entirely harmless to the point of not even killing fry. These are filter feeders though, so all they eat is microorganisms floating around in the water. As such, the usual cause of death to these shrimp is starvation - either due to the tank not being established or due to the filter's current not being adequate. A powerhead is usualy necessary and an established, mature tank with only small, non-aggressive fish or other shrimp (including the smaller, non filter-feeding species). One good reason not to keep several of these shrimp together is simply that they'll be competing for the limmited food supply.

The shrimp that you could compair to crayfish are the Macrobrachium species (longarm). These can be aggressive towards other shrimp and are territorial. Depending on species, some can still be housed together. These shrimp are capeable of killing fish.

edit: nevermind :p
