My newly purchased krib (yesterday I purchased) is in a 55g tank with a blue kenyi, a female soulosi, and a red zebra.... I looked at him today and he wasn't moving much, at all. The other fish were kinda poking it out of curiosity. Then I stuck the fish net in there to see if he would nudge, or move.... He slowly, I mean slowly, pushed himself away from the net. Then I examined his closer and it appeared he had a missing right fin, I think taken away from the female soulosi.... because it was nipping it a little. Then he wasn't moving at all (but gills were) and lying sideways (I think because no fin causes him to do that) , and the other fish were poking him calmly. After I noticed it I took him out of the tank and added him to a 5g aquarium.

poor fish!

What do I do?

who ever told you to put a krib with mbuna is indeed VERY MISINFORMED!!!!

They are far too passive to be put with such monsters so when or IF he lives move him to a larger tank, 20 gallon should me minimum IMO so you can possibly bring in a mate. But under NO circumstances put him back with the mbuna buggers unless your trying to feed them!

Scientific Name: Pelvicachromis pulcher
Other Names: Kribensis, Purple Cichlid
Family: Cichlidae
Origin: Africa
Adult Size: 3-4 inches (8-10 cm)
Social: Peaceful
Lifespan: 5 years
Tank Level: Bottom dweller
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallon
Diet: Omnivore, eats most foods
Breeding: Egglayer
Care: Easy
pH: 6.5-8.0
Hardness: 8-12 dGH
Temperature: 75-77 F (24-25 C)

do a search on PELVICACHROMIS PULCHER to learn more about your fish.
infact, next time your at a store and see something you really like, write down the name of the fish then come home and research it first. saves lots of money and frusteration if things go wrong!

Note to self: Don't listen to the employees at the pet store. Ok, I have a 28g community fish tank that might work for him...

Currently in the tank I have:
1 fire dwarf gourami,
6 (long-finned) Zeebra Danios
1 Dojo Loach
1 Red-tailed shark
2 (wag) Plattys

Now since he is missing a fin, he isn't able to swim too well (and seems to lay on his side) -- is there anything I can do to help this? I can't imagine it living too much longer with a fin missing :(

EDIT: Now that I take a closer look, it does look like he's not missing a fin, although he is staying in one position on his side in the smaller 5g aquarium I have him in temporarily.

I'm confused, does he have a fin or not? If theres a "fin bud" it might be grown back with the use of MELAFIX .

you mentioned other fish, is he in a tank by himself or not? at this criticle stage in his recovery he must be alone in a hospital tank with out stress or food compitition. watch the directions on melafix carefully, do not over dose as some people have reported serious illness/deaths from over dosing.

that red tip shark you have is going to be a nasty bugger for the krib much less anyone else, I suggest giving him away or taking it back to the lfs. they are very territorial and dont play well with others!

i have two kirbs female and male, a bala shark, a plec and a cory.

urs is probably on his side because hes stressed from all the abuse. i know one couple of kribs need a territory of 6 gallons to themselves. (for egg laying and such)
