I've had my tank 6 months and had 3 danios in it along with some other things, I recently bought a couple male & a couple of female Guppies. The danios kept hassling one of the male guppies and it kept hiding behind the filter .. anyway it got a bit damaged and died, that evening my leopard danio also died and was all wounded on one side .. strange because they had been together ages. Anyway .. all seemed to settle down and the 2 remaining zebra danios seemed to calm down and leave my other fish alone. Ayway I have noticed today that they keep bothering my other male guppie now and he's hiding behind the filter. I really dont want him to die aswell. Are Danios normally this agressive? I'm wondering if I should put them in a tank of their own? Any advice gratefully recieved. :dunno:

yes danios can become aggressive, this is normally caused by
A ) too small a group
B ) too small a tank
C ) both of the above

danios need to be in a group of at least 5 and need at least a 24" length tank, due to their activness.

Thanks for your help! It must be too small a group then, maybe I will try getting some more .... I'm presuming its ok to have a mixture of leopard & zebra?

yes any of the danio species will mix together, so you could have ZD,LD pearls etc in the same group.

FYI
the leopard danio is a man made colour morph of the ZD

I have some more now so I will keep my fingers crossed for a peaceful tank! Out of interest have you any idea how to tell which are male & which are female?

Female danios are more curvy while male danios are more straight and streamlined looking, thats about it realy as far as telling the genders apart but if your lfs(local fish store) sells danios quite young(like 2inchs long), the differences between the genders will become more obvious as they mature/grow longer ;) .
