AGH!!

okay, my poor boy's had finrot since i brought him home about 2 months ago. first i treated with Triple Sulfa. it didnt work. so i bought melafix and salt, and it seemed to be working, or at least stopping the rot -- and then he got ick!

so i treated the ick, and now that seems to be gone, and i'm back on the fin rot. been treating with maracyn, melafix and salt. it doesnt seem to be working at all... his fins arent regrowing, and i'm not sure if they're still receeding or not.

but no! that couldnt possibly be the end of his illnesses, my luck says there had to be more. so naturally, now he's got a big bump just above his top lip, sort of between his eyes. it's maybe a third of a centimeter in diameter, but it's gotten bigger since yesterday.

what the hell is it?! my god, i've never seen anything like this, and it's gotten kind of hideous.

he's still active, he still eats like a pig, and his color isnt any paler or brighter than when i brought him home. he's in a 5 gallon tank with mechical, chemical and biological filtration (i took out the carbon when i started medicating him), the tank is fully cycled, and i do 20% water change twice a week unless otherwise directed by his many medications.

so he's still got fin rot, and now a big ol' bump. i'm really worried about my poor boy... :-( he's only got about a centimeter of tail left, and his dorsal fin is starting to go as well, and if this bump gets much bigger it's going to start hindering his eating.

someone please help me. :-(

Hi, don't know if this helps or not as I'm new to keeping Betta's , but when two of my Betta's got tail-rot I was told to use either BettaFix or MelaFix. When I went to my LFS to get some, I was told that Melafix wasn't for tail-rot but BettaFix was, they couldn't elaborate on why. However it was my understanding that BettaFix was just diluted Melafix (so I'm not quite sure). However I have found BettaFix, salt and stresscoat have really helped and their tails are growing back beautifully. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

yeah. bettafix is just diluted melafix. i've been using melafix since i started keeping bettas. there's salt and stresscoat in his tank, too.... meh, i'm going to have to go to the fish store to try a different kind of medication tomorrow.

honestly i'm really more worried about the big bump on his face. i'm not sure whether or not it's any bigger today, but it's definitely not smaller.

i hope it isnt a tumor or anything. :-(

Hey, some of my guppies are suffering from a few damaged fins, one has rot which just won't go away. A dwarf gourami had mouth rot which didn't clear up, unfortunately he died yesterday :(

I tried 1 week of daily water changes and melafix, another week of just melafix, I'm now trying myxazin (I think that's how it's spelt) but I'm not sure what effect that's having yet.

I haven't added any salt though, do you recommend it? How much if you do. Would it have helped my gourami?

Hi, thanks for clearing that up for me; I thought it was the case but the LFS lady was so insistent they weren't the same thing that I didn't bother pursuing it with her. I hope your fish is better, have you tried either of these sites: http://www.bettaworld.4t.com/whats_new.html or http://www.geocities.com/learnbettas/dc.html - they both have good sections on identifying tumours and treating bacterial infections of benign tumours etc.. in bettas. Alternatively, I don't know what the situation is where you live, but in my state the university's veterinary dept. has a clinic which is used to treating a wider variety of small and large animals than your average vet practice - and very often if the vet on duty doesn't know what the problem is can often make enquiries with vets within the university etc.. who are involved in research with various species who may have some advice on what you can try. At the very least they should be able to test your water ad take swabs from your fish to culture and may be able to give you more specific med's for your betta. I guess it just depends on whether you can afford to go down this route, but maybe even give them a call and ask if any of the vets there have experience with fish. Sorry hope your fish gets better.
