i recently added a gold gourami to my 20 gallon tank, i have 4 neon tetras 5 platties a peppered cat fish, 1 fancy guppy and 1 angelfish. At first the gourami was shy but then he started nipping at the angelfish's fin damaging it, and causing the angelfish to become very shy. I just got back from a two day trip and found 't one the platties dead and the gourami chasing after the cat fish and again more damage to the angelfish's top fin. At this point i don't know what to do. Please help

thanks

Hi there. I have a gold gourami in a 55gal tank with two angelfish, some danios, and a german blue ram. The gourami used to be shy but now he picks on the angels and the ram. He will ram into them and push them around. My ram tries to put up a fight but she is much much smaller than the gourami. I have to remove him because he is getting worse in behavior.
Your tank is too small for all of those fish fully grown. An angel needs a tank about 18" to be comfortable in. A gold gourami can get to 5 inches and can be very territorial. Can you possibly rehome the gourami or take it back to the petstore? I'm sorry I can't afford happier news. If you divide the fishtank, the inhabitants will have even less space than before and that won't be good. Angelfish naturally eat neon tetras in the wild, the gourami might eat them as well. However, some say if the angel is brought up with neons they won't eat them. I never had the two together so I cannot confirm that.

thanks for the reply, I will contact the pet store where i got him because so far it seems like his behavior is getting worse so hopefully they can take him back. The angelfish is my favorite and he is not doing well with the gourami although he is awesome looking.

My angels are my favorite too. I must admit my gold gourami isn't as cute as he used to be when he was small  I like his red eyes though.
