Hi guys,

I was just wondering- whats the average age of a LFS betta? I was in a new LFS the ther day, and I say some tiny bettas  that were about 1/2 inch   . The others in the store were about 1 1/2- 2 inches. I want to talk to the pet store people about it, but I need to know the age of your average aged betta. Also, how old would you think a Half-moon, 1/2 inch, male betta. I got my betta, Kenji, who I do show and breed at 5 months old- but I do think he may have been a little old... :look:

Cheers, ZOphie :good:

I'm sorry- I just realised that I posted in the wrong section

Most are a year or under, sometimes a year and a half if they arent sold right away. Full grown male bettas have the longest fins, and that's mostly what you see sold. Breeders usually like to breed bettas when they are only half grown, so males when their fins are much shorter, they say the older a betta is the less healthy fry are, not sure if that's true though? Sometimes you can find young males sold, sometimes labeled as females by mistake, that's what happened with one of my bettas. Bettas can live to 6 years if taken care of properly, and good genetics also plays a role.

Most Bettas sold in the LFS are either old or they aren't ones that the Asian breeders want for selling for high prices, breeding, or showing. If you see any small ones that are about 1/2" they are very young like around 1 to 2 months and they can already tell that these are not top quality show or breeders. They sell off the others cheap to American LFS just to get rid of them. When mine get to that age I can already tell what ones are the biggest and best that I want to keep for breeding or showing. The rest I sell off. Out of a batch of 100 I may have one or two that I keep. The rest go.

Cool. Thanks for the info- But i'm not in the U.S, i'm in Canada. Do you have any idea if the same go's for there? :?:

Don't know about Canada but I don't think it would be any different since the Asians export world wide.
