Afternoon All,

Long time lurker here, I have had cold water for a few years on and off. My first tank was a 3ft and was a while back now, lost interest at the time as I was going out a lot and hanging with the mates and didnt spend enough time on it. I then bought a Juwel Rekord 60 and it housed my cold water fish for many years until it started leaking, tried resealing but at no avail, decided it was too small anyway, so bought a 3ft for a couple of years before I bought my current 4ft. Last week we had a power cut and the external never started up again and by the time I noticed the pump head was very hot and must have done some sort of damage to the impellor bit (not sure what it’s called) and now it won’t start up by its self, so I have ordered a replacement pump head and also decided to go tropical at the same time.
Dimension: W 120cm X H62cm X D50cm
I think I worked it out to be about 372L, if someone could correct me??
I need to order a heater and I think I will need one 300+ or 400w?
Anyway enough of me ranting on, I will ask for some help/ advise in the correct section of the forum

Good morning and welcome! :good: I came up with 372L also. Depending on your room temperature, you may only need 200 - 300W heater. I can't remember the conversion off the top of my head, but I use a 150w heater on my 55 gallon tank(4'x1'x1.5') and my tanks stay at 76F. My room temp, in the winter is 65 - 68F.

Thanks, never measured room temp but gets quiet warm in the summer...Will take that into consideeration.

I don't worry about how warm it gets in the summer, but my house gets cold in the winter. A heater won't help cool down your tank, but if you don't have a big enough heater, it won't be able to keep the tank warm when it's cold. When the tank gets too warm, I put a fan on it. If that doesn't work, I fill a 2 liter soda bottle with water and put it in my freezer. I then put the bottle in my tank, attached to the filter outlet. This can be alittle risky. If you don't do it right, you can get cold spots in your tank. I only do this when my tank gets warmer than 85F. Good luck!

Just in reference to the dimensions, there will be a gap between the top of the tank and the waterline, which will bring down your volume a bit :good:

Thanks for the advise, I'll keep that in mind. Out flat doesn't get too cold at winter but is warm during the summer months, then again british weather doesn't last long anyway!!

for a 300-400L tank, you want a 300w heater minimum

Thanks for that :good:

Are the hagen Fluval E Series Heater's any good?

I was thinking how do people work it out, from the waterline or the actuall tank size.... Thanks
