How do I know if my tank needs aeration or not? I have a 39 gal with 14 fish (see profile) I want to put a small air curtain in (7 inches) or should I be looking at a longer one? How will aeration affect my tank stability if at all? Will I be creating a porblem where ther is none now?

Lots of questions but I don't know the answers.

If your filter ripples the surface water well, you don't really need one, but some fishkeepers like the look of bubbles in the tank and some fish like to playin them, if you have real plants the airstone won't be any good.

To much 02 no good for the plants, though i'm no good in science.

Unless you are running supplimental co2 or are minimizing surface aggitation to hold in naturally generated co2, the air bubbles will not effect live plants.

The reason why people say not to use air stones with plants is because plants need CO2 to make food for them-selves and the agitation of the water surface exchanges CO2 with O2.

I have a question for those who use CO2 injectors- do you turn them off at night?
