I wanted to make sure my new plants were free of medication and fertilisers, so i've had these cabombas soaking in dechlorinated tap water for about 3 days now. the bucket they were in had a filter packet with black carbon in it.

then i rinsed them in more dechlorinated tap water, then in tank water. then i put one of the two of them in my invert tank. the invert tank is running fresh black carbon and also i put in some dechlorinator just for good measure.

my dad reckons it's too soon and that i should get them out of there.

they've been in the tank for 2 hours or so and there's no ill effects yet.

is it safe to keep the plants in there or should i remove them?

well it's possible snail treatments and other copper based treatments i'm worried about. can i be sure they're rid of those?

yes they should be gone by now.

ive never ever treated plants for copper, just look in the tank at the shop, if there are snails then theyre safe.

if you buy them online theyre safe unless theyre garaunteed snail free

hmmm.... well, i did push the filter outlet lower down in the water earlier, and lots of the shrimps are on plants or by high up by the filter. maybe the sudden lack of oxygen is why they're not eating? i've made it higher again now.....

That advice could cost someone £100's if they are keeping expensive shrimp and have bad luck ;).

I would always advise putting fresh carbon in the filter whenever you add new plants to a shrimp tank, unless you are 100% sure there's no anti-snail meds used.

I've had problems with copper even with plants that came with snails on them, and I've certainly seen tanks doesed with anti-snail meds that were full of snails.

ok, now i've taken them out, but i'm still not sure if the damage (if there is any) has already been done. the shrimps are all on plants or in high places in the tank. is this due to possible copper poisoning or just due to lack of oxygen? (I put the filter outlet lower down in the water and i think this may be why the shrimps were high up and not eating. i've raised it again now, so more air is diffused into the tank.)

i have never Q/T'd any plants, they have all gone straight in, as i know whom i buy plants off is trustworthy.

However, better be safe than sorry, if i put plants in with my SS grade CRS's i know i would be Q/T'ing the plants!!!!
