new to the tropical fish an am seeking what would be the best fish to put in the tank ,the tank is 125l the water is tested for nitrates etc so plz any advice would be gratefully welcome as i have read so many posts some seem to counteract them self ty

First things first, what is the pH/hardness of your water as that will determine which species suits the water in your aquarium. Unfortunately in fishkeeping, one water type will not suit or fit every fish

If you go to your water supply company website, enter your postcode, it will give you the full work up of the water from your tap. Once you have posted those details, and confirmed you latest water test results in numbers, then suitable fish can be suggested for your aquarium.

thanks for the advice much appreciated

Thank you for that information.

Have you done a full water chemistry test of the aquarium using a liquid test kit (which you would have needed to complete a full cycle) today, please?

Reason for asking is that you need to be 100% sure that the cycle is completed before adding fish....otherwise your fish can fall victim to poor water chemistry issues and perhaps premature death.

the tank was bought friday i have set it to how i was advised i did buy the testing kit an for two days yesterday an today that is nitrate an ammonia levels all under the level where it becomes dangerous for the inhabitants at the mo no fish are in the tank as i would like perfect conditions before apply in the fish an again ty for ya time an any advice u can give will be appreciated an adhered to

OK.

Well you are going to need to cycle the aquarium. Fishless it takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks to complete, whereas with fish it can take double that time, so fishless is by far the easiest method and will not cost the lives of fish in the process.

If you follow the advice given on this link, it will explain all aspects of the cycle process

The instructions are quite simple to carry out, if you have any questions, feel free to ask away...there are many here able and willing to help you :)

maybe a week or two for a full cycle ?
From start to finish at least 6 weeks, more likely to be anything up to 8 weeks

Sadly shopworkers rarely ever give people the right information to new fishkeepers and we see that alot. Have a read of the link I gave you and it has all the instructions on how to do the cycle properly :)

You'll need to buy a full liquid test kit (API or similar) to keep track of your water chemistry right through the cycling process. Test strips are notoriously inaccurate compared to the liquid testing. The liquid test kit is quite expensive to buy but lasts a long time and is very user friendly.

Going back to the water report in post #3, your hardness is 2.94 deg Clark. That's not one of the units used in fish keeping so we need to convert it.

Your hardness is 2.3 dH and 42 ppm. Fish profiles use one or other of those units.

Your have very soft water, so you need to look at soft water fish.
