Hi all

I am just setting up my tank, having a few problems but hopefully everything will work out. Does anyone know if I can put a clown fish like nemo and a regal tang (dori) in my tank with my tiger barbs? I think that the clown fish and regal tang are salt water fish but will they be ok in fresh water? or the other way round, will my barbs be ok in salt water? also i have thought about what temperature my tank will need to be at, for my barbs i have got it set at 25deg C, do the clownfish and regal tang require a hotter water temp?

What else would i need to take into consideration?

I look forward to your replies

Thanks

James

Simply put, no.
Those fish are tropical too, but they are marine fish.

If you REALLY want to keep those two species, it will require a lot of research and will cost you.
Marine tanks are significantly more expensive than freshwater tanks.
And generally much harder to look after.

If you still want to keep them, ask in this section.

You put tiger barbs in a marine tank, or marine fish in a freshwater tank, they will die very fast.

Yes i agree with three-fingers, putting true marine fish in a freshwater tank or true freshwater fish in a marine tank will definately kill or harm the fish. A lot of marine fish are also quite fragile, if you want to keep marine fish successfully you really need to set up a tank dedicated to them and their needs. Marine tanks are quite complex and take a while to set up and mature, so its a long process and often very expensive, however if you are interested enough in keeping marine fish and do your research properly and are willing to spend the money on the set up, then it is a more than acheivable to have a good marine tank set up :good: .
Marine fish aren't my area of knowledge though, you should check out the marine/salt water fish section of the forum for more info on such fish- brackish fishkeeping is another type of salt water fishkeeping, brackish fish are fish which need a little salt in their water but not as much as marine fish.

If you have issues/problems with your current tank set up though, i would advise waiting a while until they are sorted out and the tank is running smoothely with good fish stocking etc until you undertake another fish tank project otherwise the hobby could turn very stressful or heartbreaking for you if you take on too much to deal at once with while you are still new to the hobby etc  .

Actually, as someone who keeps FW preds, FW community, a reef and some marine pred setups, I must disagree with comments above.

I find my marine tanks far easier to care for than the FW tanks. For a Fish Only With Live Rock (FOWLR) tank the only differences from keeping FW fish are

1) you use a skimmer and Live Rock for filtration

2) you don't make as many water changes

3) stocking is lighter

4) you add salt to the water

That's it. Hardly some dark art. Live Rock does make keeping marine more costly on set up. This can be foregone, but will cost in the long run with increased water changes. There's certainly no super hard difficulty in keeping simple marine tanks.

I think some people have a problem thinking of marine tanks as anything other than super hi-tech SPS set ups...
