Can anyone recomend a good (reasonably priced) ro unit. I live in a very hard water area, and thinking about keeping Discus. I would like to connect it to my outside tap. I have a 41 gal tank. Any advice.

There are lots of places for advice on RO units. Just put Reverse Osmosis into Google!

I wouldn't recommend connecting it to an outside tap, if by that I take it it's gonna be somewhere were the weather can get at it. RO membranes and frost is a no-no :shout:

An average 4 stage sytem will probably set you back about £75ish and from there the sky's the limit!

RO-Man is the best IMHO
we sell his 50g a day units for £69.99
as a domestic customer you wouldn't get anywhere near 50G a day usage, therfore it will last you a good few years.

thanks for info i will check the ro-man out. As my water is very hard would i need a di as well. I'm affraid i'm not very technical, are these things easy to use?

Once they are set up (connected to the tap or pipe they are very easy to use) the RO unit is all you would need for discus water

good point about frost my impatience is getting better of me. do i cycle my tank using the ro water or do i add that later? i have another tank and was thinking about using the ceramic and sponge filter media and adding it to my new filter to speed things up. want to keep discus eventually and add the fish from my other tank:8 rummy nose,2 bristle nose cats and 6 cardinals, thinking i'd like clown loaches or angels as well, will these be ok? lots more questions comming as i've only kept easy tropicals before and a brief meddle with a jack dempsey, kirbs and angels so bit nervous of the tech stuff but also excited and impatient. thanks for your help, so glad i found this site

I am not sure about the cycling ammonia reacts differently to water with a ph under 7 its less toxic, my guess is that cycling with the water your fish will be living in would be safest, though I don’t know for sure. Yeah using filter media from a cycled would speed up the process.
The rummy and the cardinals would be very happy in discus water, its better for them and they wont bother the discus. I don’t know about the cats as I haven’t kept them. Clown loaches and angels I have kept with discus without any problem. I have read that angels carry similar diseases to discus and are more immune to them than the discus, so its often said that angels are a big no with discus. This was not my experience.

The fish you have now would need to be gradually acclimatised to the discus water before they could go in. You would also need to check with the discus seller what water they are in so that you can match that as closely as possible when they arrive.

Yeah impatience is an issue, but you will thank yourself if you do it properly from the start. Happy discus are a great joy, unhappy ones won’t last long.

Good luck with them

Liam
