Hi,
I have 8 platy's in my community tank, 1 male and 7 female.
The male is besotted with 1 of the females and just chases the others off.
I was speaking to a member of staff in a "pet shop" yesterday and he said that the female would die because the male would just keep getting her pregnant and her womb would eventually rupture.
I have taken the female out of the community tank (she is pregnant) and put her in a 9 gallon tank with my male betta. After some initial flaring he seems to be ignoring her now.
I feel really bad about taking her out of the community tank though and am stuck between the devil and the deep blue see.
I am asking for opinions as i am not convinced that i have done the right think. The pet shop aren't always as knowledgable as they like you to think.
(I have had to explain the fishless cycle to him in the past)
Would appreciate any opinion.

Thanks
Karen

what about putting her back in the community and putting the male in with the betta instead? Otherwise i think the betta will eat your fry. Or, if you have space, get a few more females and maybe he will end up with a few more #1 girlfriends? I have 1 male guppy with 7 females, as he also comes on too strong, and he can't have any fewer than 7. Hope your girl is ok, good luck.

What if you would add another male to the tank? This may help control him and give him something else to tend to. It would be fine to have 2 males and 7 females, unless your tank is not large enough. Also try moving some decorations around if you can, then try adding her back in. That sometimes helps to disorient the fish.

I have never heard of a fish rupturing because a male is trying to breed to much. The only thing I have heard is that if there is only 1 female to a male, the male can really stress the female out and she can die.

Any excuse to buy a new fishy
Bought another male and popped him in. Bully boy is now busy doing the handbags at 20 paces.
Put the female back in too and she is much happier! Made a b-line for bully boy though so she's not that worn out, yet!
