I currently have a UGF on my 100L, i now also have an Eheim 2215 running on the same tank to "cycle" this filter.

I want to switch over to this filter at some time, with a view long term to get rid of the UGF and go sand for the substrate.......

The tank was fully cycled with the UGF and has been running for some months.

As the Eheim builds up good bacteria.......can I just one day switch off the UGF? (in a month or so).....

......or will it only build up half as much bacteria as it needs (as it is sharing the load with the UGF).........

.....your thoughts and comments are appreciated.........?

One day when you have abit of time on your hands, I would remove the ugf from the tank, as long as the filter is sufficient for the tank I can't see any problems with removing it, It will make a mess when you remove the ugf but stick some filter floss in your filter for a few hours that will remove alot of the dirt, then replace some clean filter wool back into the filter.

When i got rid of my UGF in my 10 gallon the filter I switched to had already been used on another for a while so that had plenty of bacteria in it.

I drained the tank down completely, crabs in a bucket!

took the gravel out then the tray took it outside and hosed it down then back inside dump the sand in it arange the rocks fill her up up to temperature with the filter in place then dump the crabs back in when it was running smoothly!.

Good luck!, you can always get some filter bags to put some of the old nice and dirty gravel in stick that in a ehiem media basket to give a boost on bacteria until the sand matures a bit.

 True enough, true......

ta....will give it a go in January I think......

......would love to go cichlid........but have all these Mollies.........
