i currently have a 25g and want to upgrade to a bigger tank, at least double size. if and when i get the new tank how do i go about setting up?? do i need to cycle a completely new tank or just transfer my water over to the new one(obviously topping up) and what about filtration? currently have a fluval 3+ with sponge media but of course this will change so what happens setting up a new filter? basically can everything be switched over or do i have to cycle a new tank?? any help appreciated.

Almost all of the benifitial bacteria resides in your filter media therefore you would normally (if the filter was the same or similar) add the old filter media into the new filter and let it run for a couple of days. Or if not you should try and squeeze as much of the gunk from the old filter media onto the new filter media in the new filter. It really depends on what filter you will be upgrading to.

well i'd be going from a internal filter to an external filter so would be much bigger and take different media i should think.
