Hi all,

I'm wanting to set up a new tank for some molly fry that are due imminently!!

I have a spare 10 gallon tank, heater and brand new filter, Obviously as the filter is new the whole setup would need cycling. So I was wondering if it would be possible to cycle this tank quickly by adding a few fish and using some gravel from an established tank, seed it that way. The thing I don't know is where to put the gravel as it is a different colour to the one I'm putting in this fry tank. Could I just put a handful in the filter. or would I have to somehow put some in the tank itself? Is it even going to help???

Any advice most welcome

Andy

Take a peice of your cycled filter and put it in the new filter but remember to replace anything you removed with new filter foam, dont remove more than 25% of your filter media.

Alternitavly (this is the way i use) Take the filter sponges from your cycled tank and give them a squeeze into a bowl, then put them back in their filter, soak the new filter foam/floss in the bowl to allow them to absorb the good bacteria then put them in the new filter, try and do this as quickly as you can as the bacteria begin to die quite quickly.

Hope i helped lol and keep us updated on the fry

Good luck :good:

Cheers for the tip Forest!

Will give that a go. How long do you think it would take a tank to cycle using that method?

If you want to use a bit of gravel too, put a good handful in an old thin sock (clean one of course) and hang it over the edge of the tank into the water. Then when the tank is cycled you can siply remove sock and tip gravel back into first tank. Keep an eye on the water stats every day as you may get a mini cycle and do water changes accordingly.

Good luck :good:
