Ok I have a problem with planting plants. They dont stay put  How do I plant them to stay there?? Currently I have a fern looking plant and a curly something or other. The curly one is still in the pot as ive only just learnt they cant remain in there  But until I can find out how to securly plant them I dont want to take it out yet. I want to add more plants but again im holding off until They can stay firmly planted.

Suggestions pleae, U use a normal gravel base. :)

If the plants have well developed roots they should stay in quite easily in any kind of gravel or sand as long as the grains aren't to large. If the fern type plants is a microsorum sp. - http://www.tropica.com/productcard.asp?id=008 they souldn't be planted in the gravel they sould be tied with thread or elastic band to a rock or wood where they will soon secure them selves to.

The curly plant in the pot should be held in by there by a furry medium called rock wool remove from the pot and remove most of the rock wool leaving a little attached to the roots, this should then be easily secured in the gravel, if it looks like there are more than one plant in the pot you may want to devide them before planting.

Hope this helps.

Hi thanks. Right impatient me not waiting for answer got stuck in  I took the curly plant out the pot and unwrapped all the fuury foam stuff, cleared gravel away and held it to bottom, then pushed back a load of gravel quite deep around it (hope thats all ok) When you say if there seems more than one, well the curly plant, each long curly bit were all individual bits anyway, wasnt lots of long curly leaves coming off one stem or anything. Does that sound right??

The fern, oops ive planted it same way  Does the thread/elastic band stay permanantly on?? Will it die now ive planted it?? (im so impatient  )

Just hope they stay down now.

Ok by looking on the link you posted my fern doesnt look like that, I looked in picture area on there and cant find it!

The other plant looks to be Vallisneria americana.

Do you know what plants they are?

Dad new the fern type plant is not a true aquatic plant, it will slowly start to rot away, best remove it. I really don't know why fish store sell plants like this.

The vallis probablyamericana var Biwaensis looks fine make sure you don't plant it too deep have the gravel just above the base of the plant.

the plants in the last phot are planstic aren't they?

That vall is probably Vallisneria spiralis of spiral/twisted vall. Most valls are easy to keep but tend to prefer harder water and a decent plant substrate or root tabs.

So the fern isnt actualy a tank plant  They took it out one of there tanks. Its been growing pretty well, was a little sprig before lol. My god I cant believe that isnt a plant for tanks, could it of caused any damage to fish?? Ohh Im going to take it back and have a go tomorrow, that was from a petstore up the road.

Yes the front 2 are plastic lol. Once I have the hang of live plants the plastic ones will slowly vanish.

I deep planted the other one or it all pops out again, will it be ok planted like that for a bit until it roots a bit more?

Ok I have a problem with planting plants. They dont stay put

I wouldn`t worry about this too much. I planted 200 stems today and expect to be replanting 100 of them tomorrow, 75 the next day, 50 the.......... :X

Dave.

I have just watched a bunch of five stems float to the top. I`ll replant them tomorrow as today`s planting has given me a bad back!

Dave.

Yeh its so frustrating isnt it! So far the one I planted has stayed put (fingers crossed) Ive just throen the fern on in the bin as some one said its not an aquatic plant and it was worrying me. Will get some more plants tomorrow from Pets at home as this is only place I can get to.

Any suggestions on what to get?
