Adding sand to a well established tank.

I currently have a planted, stocked 29 gallon tank with 100% flourite of 2.5-3 inches deep.

Problem is i would like to add some sand for the looks that sand provides and also my cories and oto would appreciated it. So, how would I add sand to flourite, because wont the sand eventually mix with the flourite and eliminate the sand look im going for?

yes, i tried it before worked for a while but eventually the sand and gravel just started to mix up a barrier would be good but possible only with newly setup tanks

Hmm i wonder what i can use for a barrier?

stones ,slate piled up to become a small wall i know it will work well but eventually (especially) if the cories or other fishes start stirring the sand, it will mix with the gravel
