Can you add sand to a tank with a fish in it?

yes just shut down any and all filters or power heads, let it settle then crank them back on.

i did, and what a mess about !! worth it tho ...

i took everything out, including the fish, and set up a temporary tank closeby. only intended to be for a cppl of hours, but ended up being for 3 days!! i washed and washed the sand before putting in but it still went cloudy. and i mean thick, dark brown cloud made up of sand, dust, tiny particles and wat'not... i put a filter in and it cleared it all in 3 days. rinsing the sponge every 6+ hours to stop it getting blocked.

i admit i panicked abit and asked the guys at my lfs. they said it always happens with sand. no matter how much you wash. obviousley tho the more you wash the less dust/cloudyness ect but there still will some.

it makes sence to me that if you just leave it to settle without any filter, than the dust, ect just gunna settle on the bottom and cloud your water again with any slight disturbance. but put a filter in and that will filter out any dust, ect and leave you with just sand. you know what i mean ?

go for it tho, its worth the hassle. my fish love it. :good:
