If one does not have a hydrometer, then is there any thumb rule by which one can decide on the quantity of marine salt to be added to a Molly tank? Also, which is more harmful for the Mollies, less or more salt? I am asking this so that for safety sake I can try and keep within the lesser harmful limit.

Mollies dont need salt, but it makes then easier to keep.

If you have very good water quality then they should be fine.

They are often farmed in brackish water's though so it worth seeing how they settle in at the shop befor buying them.
As for a hydrometer i dont know as i dont use salt.

As above, salt isn't essential, but you will have happier more colourful mollies - ideally a specific gravity of 1.003-1.004 but without a hydrometer this will be tough to judge, theres no preference with more or less, they can live happy enough with no salt and believe it or not they can also live happily in marine tanks (they are often used to establish new marine set ups). To give a rough guide on how much salt you will need i would need to know the volume of your aquarium? - also tank mates, ph and kh if possible please.
