Adding Plants For 1St Time

So im going to add some plants into my aquarium when i change from gravel to sand. Never had plants before so do i need to know anything before getting them. Do i just bury into sand and keep the lights on a timer or is there more to it. The more information anyone can give me the better.

Don't bury rhizomes in the substrate (Java fern, Anubias), remove all pots and weights, separate the individual plants and plant them a few cm apart, keep lights on 8-10 hours to start with and adjust slightly as needed (you should have your lights on a timer anyway), pick undemanding plants of different types (rhizome, rosette, stem, moss) and don't worry if some don't work for you.
