Adding Plant Substrate To Established Tank?

Can you add a planting substrate to a mature and established tank? Or do you need to fertilise plants with root tablets?

you can but it would need a strip down and to re layer the substrate, but i have heard of freezing it into ice cubes and pushing them into the substrate, but i would do it properly and strip it down and start again, if your not up for the effort then go for root tabs.
