Me and my fiancé just got a 75 gallon tank. Previously he had a 30 gallon with 7 tiger barbs and a rainbow shark. We’ve set up the tank, checked the water, and got it to a good temperature then added the fish from the 30 gallon. Shortly after we added 3 albino tiger barbs and two more bottom fish, a sucker fish and a pictus catfish. Now since were new to this, we were wondering how long until we can add more tiger barbs? We’re also looking into another type of fish to add with the tiger barbs and bottom feeders. I would prefer a type of fish that schools, not another single fish. How many tiger barbs can we get if we want another school of a different fish? What type of fish can we get that schools and gets along in a semi aggressive tank? Thanks xx

if your smaller tank had been running for a month or more it probably has an established filter and you can move that onto the new tank and you will have an instant established filter.

Welcome to TFF.

First thing I am sorry to mention, is you have an issue with the Pictus Catfish. This species is peaceful but it is predatory and as it matures it will eat small fish. It should be kept in a small group of at least 5; single fish may pine away. Tankmates should not include sedate fish like angels, discus, gourami or even cichlids as these will be pestered by the nocturnal habits of this catfish. Also, avoid nippy fish like barbs--Tiger Barb being the worst. Medium-sized characins, larger rasbora, rainbowfish are suitable with a group of Pictus. The pictus needs a 4-foot tank, so I assume your 75 meets this.

The Pictus are also probably not a good idea with a Rainbow Shark. Although the Rainbow is sometimes more tolerant of other substrate fish than its cousin the Red Tail Shark, it is not always the case. Be prepared if you get a group of Pictus to have to remove the Rainbow.

The Tiger Barb would be fine on their own in the 30 gallon, with a few more. That is one option which would avoid the Pictus issue in the 75g.
