i read that if a fish is constantly at the top of the tank, taking in air, that it needs more oqygen.
my molly is always going to the top sucking air.
should i add a bubble maker of some sort?

Right you have put this in the wrong place, need water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

where was it supposed to go? i figured since i know very little about keeping fish, it would be best to post in the newbie section.

water change today 30%, after treating for tail anf fin rot.

water:
amonia 0
nitrate 40
nitrite 0
ph between 6.8 &7.2

the nitrate has climbed since i added the medication but the molly had been sucking air long before that.

First, hi Jetosy and welcome to the forum. :hi:

This section is mainly for people to introduce themselves when they join. Unfortunately, not a lot of members come here to welcome them. This question probably should be in the Beginners section. When you're new, its hard to figure out what goes where. It's not a big problem, you just won't get many replies here.

As for the question, you are right that generally if a fish is spending a lot of time at the top almost like their grazing the top or feeding, it usually means they need oxygen. What temperature do you have the heater set on? High temperatures can drive oxygen from the water. I know that some medications tell you to turn the temperature up but don't know if that is the case with what you used or not. It doesn't look like there's any problem with your water parameters.

PM one of the moderators (names in blue at the bottom of the Forum Index page) and have them move this to the beginners section or maybe even the livebearers section. I don't have any mollys so I'm not really very knowledgable on them. That may be normal behavior for them. I think they generally do prefer the top portion of the tank anyway.

Wow, thank you so much for the welcome and the info ;) My water temp is @ 78. I have the guppy babies in a breeding tank in there and read that they preferred higher temps.
I'll have this moved, thank you again!!

I agree with rdd1952, when you add meds it reduces the 02 in the water so you have to increase aeration with an airstone or if you can turn filter up.
