I've just set up a 35L tank with 1 small oranda & 2 variatus platys 9 days ago and things are going ok. Would like to know how many fish would be best suited for our tank( I know orandas can grow quite a bit). Would like another oranda but would the platys be ok with 2 orandas? The 3 fish we have are getting along and swim around the tank together & I'm afraid by adding more fish things may become unsettled. I'd be grateful for any help as this is our first aquarium !! Also would both varieties of fish be ok with frozen daphnia? :D

The oranda will get much too big for the 35l tank I'm afraid. Additionally they're such messy fish that you need a lot of good filtration, more than you could get in a 35l. You certainly can't get more than one in that sized tank. If you ditch the oranda you might be able to keep four or five platies. Sorry about that. Check out thr coldwater fish section for more info on minimum tank sizes for these fish.

How did you cycle the tank? By this I mean waiting for good bacteria to colonise in the filter which takes around 6 weeks of adding ammonia or fish food. If you were unaware of this then check out the beginners section for 'fish-in cycle' and be prepared for six weeks of hard work and daily water changes. It's worth it though!
