Is it okay to add local rocks from my garden to the tank for the fish to hide in and around? If so, how would I make sure it is clean and not going to contaminate the tank? Right now I have a 46G bowfront with 35lbs of natural pebbles substrate, 3 fake plants, one real plant, 3 zebra danio, & 5 cardinal tetra. The tank is about 2 1/2 wks old. I am back into the hobby after a 9 year break to raise 4 children, 9,6,4,&2.

You will have to sterlise them in boiling water a few times, then let them dry out.
What type of rocks are they.

The rocks I am considering look like shale, and others are just regular river rocks. Is it significant to do the boiling more than once? and for how long would you recommend?

I just put the rocks or stones in a plastic toy box and fill them with boiling water a couple of times, and tip it away, the third time I just leave them in the boiling water till it goes cold, them let them dry out for aday.
Do a search on tank rocks sterilising them.

If the rocks have sharp edges sandpaper them down.

Thank you, I will do the search.

I would research the rocks before you add them to the tank, as some rocks can be toxic in a tank.
