How deep do i need it to be??? If i go for about 2" then i will still need to spend £50 on substrate. Please dont say 3" is 100% nessasary.

Thats what i was planig to do anyway. Wiht ADA at the back and using black sand in the front cresent shape. Will the fish not mess it all up anyway???

Will cories do it??? If so then they can stay at the LFS. I was going for angles, RTBS, Neons a couple of BN's or a few ottos.

I wouldn't worry about a little mixing, even if there was you have still achieved what you wanted to do (i) use less expensive substrate (ii) and put it where you want it (iii) and you say you are using black gravel to the front of the aquarium so if your going for ADA Amazonia then you'll be doing just fine.

The only issue about mixing ADA soil with gravel or fine sand is if the color of the two are different.
Allot of tanks have ADA Amazonia at the rear and ADA Nile sand at the front so black mixed into white would look .

I wouldn't worry if I was you.
