hello everyone, ive done some acid/vinegar testing on a few stones recently and the results were quite intriguing.

most of you must have read or heard about the acid/vinegar testing on some stones/gravels, if they would be safe or if they would affect the chemical balance of the tank.

i picked up a few stones by the riverside, gardens, driveways, hardware, and fish shop. and ive decided to try the acid test with the stones. so if it reacts = not safe for the freshwater tank. if it doesnt, then its probably safe :)

as i have expected, some reacted and some didnt. but what intrigued me is that some of the stones i bought from the fish shop reacted. i bought, some normal gravel, slates and other different rock sizes. the shop owner also checked the other stones i got and said that they were ok for freshwater use. now the store has been operating for many years now, more than 6 years atleast. the owner is great and he takes care of his fishes/tanks/store. he even has a couple of big a$$ tanks in his place, which are significantly much nicer than the ones he has in the shop of course.

so, how helpful is this acid/vinegar testing really!? accuracy?! as i said, what bugs me is that some stones that were labelled as "safe for freshwater tank use" and actually being sold in the shop, reacted with this acid test, and therefore "unsafe?!"

anyways, i just wanted to share my experience.

Shops are notoriuous for buying in any old rocks that are cheap and look nice. As far as they're concerned, rasing your pH/whatever is a good thing, becasue they can then sell you all the 'pH down' potions, and possibly have a reason to refuse you a refund if a fish dies.
