so yeh i accidentally unplugged my filter last night insted of something else, ive read the bacteria can die if the filter gets turned off for too long

going to keep my eye on my water stats will i have much of a problem?

thanks

I think you will be OK, I understand it's only if the filter media is out of the water and dry's out that the bacteria is lost. I recently had a power cut which went off at 9am and was out most of the day and it had no detremental effect on the tank or inhabitants.

Ahh, swear i read the bacteria would die unless it had oxygenated water passing through it, or something.

But hopefully will be fine :good:

I'm sure you'll be fine, The power cut was only two weeks ago and I have had fish spawn since. Just keep a close eye on everything as I'm sure you usually do.

I had the same problem once, I unplugged my external for maintenance and forgot to plug it back in.
Got home after work and god did I swear.

No ammonia or any issues at all for that matter, so I think they can survive as long as they are submerged. After all, water is part oxygen anyway.

It takes something like 12 hours for the bacteria to start dying. As long as it is kept wet then it should have a good chance of being OK. It does die faster without a flow of highly oxygenated water but I think you might be OK with it just being off overnight.

Just get it back on and test your water daily for a week or so.

I moved house with a cycling tank. I put the filter sponge and bio-media in a jar half full of tank water. For 4 days, all I did was put the lid on the jar, invert it a few times each evening to agitate the water, and tank the lid off.

I saw no ill effects.
