I bought a new filter for my 30 gal tank, as the old one was starting to dye. Anyways, the new filter (Which I thought was perfect) came with a different sort of filter pads.
So I hooked up the new filter, with the new pad and everything and cut a few strips off my old filter pad and placed them in with the new one, thinking it would jump start the cycle. I suppose it did, but it wasn't nearly enough to handle the amount of waste my fish produced.
A platy developed fin rot. Then another did, then a BNP did. I tested the water, the ammonia was .25. I did a 50% water change and monitored the water for days, I did another 25% two days later.

I went away for the weekend (Well 4 days)
I got back today to find a platy dead and two of my three BNP's. All appeared to have fin rot and I've found a case of Ick in the tank as well. I tested the water, it was somewhere between .25 and .5, and I'm guessing it had been that way for about three days. (I really should have done a water change before I left)

I've done a 60-70% change and added API ick cure. I ran out of fin rot treatment, but if I keep the water clean it should be ok. I've also upped the temperature to 80-82.
I cant add salt because I have Cory's in the tank....
Is there anything else I can do or do I just have to keep a close eye on my tank until it's through cycling again? :/

I have a cycled 20 gal tank. It has 4 small filter cartridges in it. I'll take 1 of those out and put it in the 30 gal, it's not perfect but hopefully it'll be a start :/
thanks.
