Hi all, this is where I currently am (totally new to tropical fish keeping).

I have the tank set-up (65l), filled with tap water, added water conditioner (10ml) for the chlorine.

Gravel, wood, stone in tank.

Water heat is currently at around 86.

Tested water pH - around 7.5

I put a new filter in there yesterday (a Fluval 2+), and with it came a couple of extra filter pads - a Polyester Filter Pad and a Carbon Filter Pad.

As things stand, the only thing in the filter is the original foam pads which were in it when purchased.

Am I supposed to add one of these to the filter pads (it doesn't actually say), and if so, which one?

Also, as long as it's from a healthy tank, will ANYTHING I manage to get possibly help speed up the cycling process (gravel, stone, decor, water, media...)?

I also received a sample of this 'Cycle' stuff which is meant to speed things up. Now, I know they are not rated too highly on here, but as I have it, I may aswell use it - how, and when, should I add this to the water?

Cheers all, just popping out to buy a medicine dropper to measure the ammonia. :)

Hi, and welcome,

I have the fuval 2 filter and what you want to do is put the white pad (the black one is the carbon one, which will you not need to use unless you have to use any medication) in between the two big sponges that are already in the filter, it takes a little bit of force to pull the plastic off the first time.

If you know anyone who already has a tank set up and is willing to donate any of their filter media, this will speed up the fishless cycle quite considerably.

I've never used cycle, so can't really comment on it, but the general consensus areound here is that it's pretty useless. But in my opinion it can't do any harm putting it in.

Just to make sure, is the ammonia you are using the correct stuff? does it have ingredients on it? or does it foam up when shaken?

Now i'm not certain of this, but i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that wood isn't the best thing to put in a tank, need somebody who knows more than me to either confirm or sorrect me.

Cheers for the filter advice, will do that now. :good:

The ammonia os the correct stuff, from boots - 9.5%. 3.4ml for a 65l tank.

The wood I was referring to is bogwood.
