One of the ladies I work with came to me this morning because she knows I love bettas. She told me that an employee who had been fired last week left a small 1gal tank on her desk with a betta in it. She did not know if anyone has fed it or checked on it since early last week. The lady who told me about it said she thought that the fish was gone, but this morning she saw it barely moving in the tank. I have left a message with the fired employee's supervisor to see if anyone is feeding it. If not, I will be looking for a place near work to get him some food. (I have plenty at home, but I live 25 miles away.) He probably will need a water change, too. I never dreamed I would have to rescue a betta here at work. I can't believe she just left him!!!!

Just got a call back from the supervisor. She said one of the other ladies had gone out and gotten some tropical fish flakes and they were feeding him in the mornings. I told her I would bring in some pellets, and declorinator in the morning to change out his tank. She said they were concerned about him as well, and she was glad to know that someone who had a little knowledge about could help. Needless to say, if the fired employee does not claim him he will have a home!!!

I used to like this woman, too. :X

I'd say the employee deserved to get fired if she left her betta behind. lol
That fish could probably become the mascot for your desk now :)

That's awful poor thing, just leaving a fish it's disgraceful, hope it survives.

I really hope she doesn't come back and get him. At least if he's here I know he'll be taken care of properly. If she'd go off and leave him here without making arrangements for him, then she'd probably do the same thing if she took him home. I've already thought about rearranging my desk...... :shifty:

Poor little guy :( . I can't believe some people . Good thing you heard about it and can get him taken care of.

The heck?
IF that person comes back for him, tell that punk-o woman that he now has a new owner that ACTUALLY CARES for him. No way would I be giving him back.
HECK no.

AND...
if she gives you some lame-o excuse for not coming back like, oh, say being bitter at the company, you tell her she could have at LEAST called or emailed someone to at least look after her fish til she came back.

oh, the nerve...

I really doubt she will be back. She didn't leave under the best of circumstances. :sly: I can easily run upstairs and take care of him the next few days. Then I will suggest bringing him down to my office so I can keep an eye on him. Since my office is in what is called "the dungeon" once he gets down here, no one will ever be able to find him again. Hehehe.

Sorry for the double post, but one of the guys I work with went up to see him, since I can't get away from the desk right now. He knows a little about bettas and said he is swimming around now, and that he is huge, and bright red, he said the little guy is really beautiful. He grinned and asked me if I wanted him. I have a feeling I'll have a betta on my desk when I come in one morning soon.

I know I'm gonna get bad thoughts from some people about this statement but here goes:

I'm not condoing this person leaving their fish, but having never been fired and greatly afraid of it...I can't imagine what my state of mind would be if that happened. You say it wasn't under good circumstances...that could very well explain it..she may not think she can call back or that anyone would take her calls. Or she could be super duper tee-d off...who knows. Seriously enough though, I would come back for mine..just becasue I'm a fanatic about my fish...as most of us here are..but to 90% of the population..they are just a decoration. It stands to reason why they would just leave it for someone else to take care of. (might be why she got fired..leaving thigns for others to take care of :dunno: )

Good luck with your new buddy though...hope everything works out in your favor.

I am trying to be understanding, but I know she has several close friends who work here as well as her boyfriend. When I spoke with the supervisor, none of them had been up to check on him, not even the boyfriend. I know that the company would have allowed any of them to take him home to her if she had asked. I could let it go for a day or so, but this has been a week now. I work for a company that has many blind employees. Their seeing eye dogs are just like family to the rest of us. (We have had retirement parties for the dogs when they are too old to work any longer.) We are very compassionate here about any animal and no one would have kept her from getting him if she had made any effort at all. Her boyfriend is out of town on business right now, but I am waiting to have a talk with him when he gets back tomorrow.
