 POLY WOOL

If you have'nt used it before its well worth a go!!

I use it in ALL my filters.

When used in conjunction with a filter It removes super fine sediment that even fine foams dont!!

Any space in your filter can be filled with the poly wool enhancing the tanks filtration capacity!!

For a carrier bag size full it cost around £12 and will last ages. (interpet polymer wool).

Put it on your list when you go shopping.

GETS MY THUMBS UP ;)

Invest in a quality heater with a solid thermostat. Once you have one you’ll wonder why you bothered with the cheap ones for all those years.

If you have the space, store buckets or big water containers when you have them, even if you dont need them at the time, handy when you do.
I use the big 20 litre water bottles that you find on drinking water machines that go in offices normally, keep 5 of these in your garage thats 100 litres of space 10 bottles and youve got 200 litres,

The Ultimate top tip !!! Change 25% water every week and enjoy the benefits :)

 TIMERS FOR YOUR FISH TANK LIGHTS

Its worth while having timers for your fish tank lights for soo many reasons, heres a few:

Too much lighting aids algae growth 10 fold, so try to maximise your lighting to 10 - 12 hrs.

My fish have a body clock too, so having set times for day light and dark gives the fish the proper time to rest and then a correct feeling of time to wake up, just as they would in the wild. Enhancing their natural behavior.
As opposed to randomly turning the lights on and off to suit the fish keeper.

For multipul light set ups, use a few timers and stagger the times the lights get turned on in the morning and off in the evening, giving a better sence of sun rise and sun set.

If you have certain species which prefers to come out at night, maybe invest in a blue moon tube or a marine glo tube and set these on a timer also to come on just half hour before your main tube turns off, hey presto nocturnal fish viewing. (dont leave this tube on all night as the blue light promotes brown algae ). ;)

WHATS YOUR TOP TIP?

starve your fish for at least 1 day a week (personally 2 days a week)

gives them time to clear the leftovers and keeps snail populations down.

Know your fish and their needs. Overfilter. Understock. Keep schooling fish in schools. Never buy on impulse.

Now where have I seen that before?

Big one that I wish newbies knew more... Healthy plants; healthy fish. If you keep your tank well planted and healthy from the start, you are much less likely to suffer from new tank syndrome and will have an infinitely more stable tank in the long run.

 INTERNET FISH FOOD BUYING
I buy almost all my dried food over the internet, the main auction site provides me with quality and greater quantity than all fish shops at a cheeper price!! ;)

WHATS YOUR TOP TIP

Do as much work on your tank as you can while your spouse is sleeping/out.

Run up huge credit card bills on new equipment and stuff you don't really need, but want to play with anyway. Your spouse will love you for this.

1) Buy all hardware (filters, heaters, etc) online. You will save 30 to 60 percent.

2) Don't get MTS. That's an expensive disease.

Purchase all rocks from a landscaping or garden center rather then a LFS. This will save you an incredible amount of money.
