Hey all, I don't own any tropical fish tanks, so I don't know very much about them unfortunately. I do have a betta fish though.

Yesterday I went to my local fish store and asked them for four snails to put in my bettas tank (he lives in a 5 gallon and sometimes he looks lonely, even though I know he appreciates the solitude). The woman told me they didn't have any in the sale tank so she got them from the back. So I took the snails home with me and started to drop them in when I noticed this tiny fry swimming around on the bottom of the bag. I called the fish store I bought him from but they said they were unable to identify the fry because he had come in with the deliver and weren't aware of who the potential parents were, and couldn't take him back because I didn't /buy/ him, and then told me to just feed him to the betta fish, which I would rather not do.

I cleaned out a fish bowl and took some water from my fathers 50 gallon aquarium, floated him on top of it for 20 minutes and then put him in. He's maybe half an inch big at this point and his only notable feature is that he's long with a half-circle tail.

I know there are lots of websites around about caring for fish fry, but unfortunately there aren't any for caring for just /one/ fry.

I guess my question is that if I don't know what kind of fish he is, and I only have the one fish (aside from my betta) how should I take care of him so I can avoid feeding him the wrong food, or at the wrong temperature?

Really difficult without knowing how old the fry is or its parentage but a good food would be tropical fish flakes ground up well, suitable for its sized mouth or some defrosted daphina. If it does go for any food you do put in try to see if it takes food from the surface, only chases moving food or hunts around the floor for food. These habits could be a good way of helping narrow down what exactly it is.

Could you take a picture? We might be able to help narrow down the possibilities.

I feed my guppy fry tetra mini as well as other things.

If the fry is pitch black, a deep velvety black, it most likely is a molly baby. I myself would love to see a picture. Mysteries are fun to try to solve :p
