Well I am ignorant but are betta's the fighting fish kept in those small tanks in the lfs. are they tropical or are they kept as Goldfish ?
When I asked they told me they were for experienced fish lovers.
I am new to it all and have kept tropicals but I am confused as on here some seem to treat in small bowls like Goldfish.
Are there different varieties?

tropical!!

there are different types of betta
but the main one you're going to find are Betta Splenden Veil Tails

and they're easy to look after if you have the basic know-how
i've only been fish keeping since august, and now i have 3 of them!

look in the Betta forum on here for more info.

The optimal betta temperature is 74-82F,

Yes that would sound tropical but would they be okay with other tropical fish.
It says a gallon bowl at least then some where talking of Betterware containers I guess a fish tank is just a Glass container.
I am just amazed at the lfs saying definately not for beginners.
I just thought as some call goldfish anything that looks golden from Tetras to those you win at those fairground places.
When I was young I kept one until it had to go in my sisters pond. It just ate and grew.
Do Bettas get bigger and is their only danger of fin nipping tank mates ?

bettas get to around 2.5-3 inches max really (unless you get a giant plakat but that's a hole different story)

it's best to keep them alone really.
i've kept mine with corys before and you can try with with bristlenose catfish and ottos if your tank is large enough. shrimp can work too, as long as you betta doesn't see them as lunch.

don't ever keep them with larger aggressive fish. and never with gouramis.

but fish like tetras etc. may nip their long fins. and no fast fish like danios either, bettas eat slowly and fast fish may cheat them out of dinner!

Well thats why then they need to be on their own.
Thanks I think I'll miss on them .
They do look so beautiful though.
