We had a betta (male) that was being picked on by the two females. So much so that we had to put him in an isolation tank. He got better and I'd made plans for my brother to take him when he visits over christmas. Only on tuesday he escaped from the holding tank and took a real battering from the girls. We hoped he'd be ok but we found he dead thata night :(

Then last night we couldn't find the new fish we brought. I forget what it was called but it was alittle expensive compared to the others. Looks abit like a cat fish......well anyway he managed to get caught behind the heater and as a result died :/

This morning I found one of the guppies dead. I put this down to some hassle she had been getting from the new males we recently added. We've also beening having some bother with out heater as it wasn't holding the temp correctly resulting it a big drop at night.

So all in all not a good time of it lately.

Going to give the tank a 25% water change tonight as we're away over Christmas. Hopefully there wont be anymore deaths while we're away.

A male betta being picked on by two female bettas? Why were they in the same tank together to begin with?

The only time you should ever put male and female bettas together is when you are trying to breed, otherwise what you have just experienced will happen. The males can't move as fast as the females due to their longer finnage, so the females will end up beating the crap out of him and eventually kill him. No offence, but in the future, I suggest doing extensive research on the fish you want to keep together to make sure they are compatible. That way you can avoid any more situations like this one. This forum is one of the best ones for research on almost any kind of fish. There are a lot of experienced fishkeepers on here who are more than willing to help. Just make sure to try out the search bar at the bottom of the screen before you post anything cause more than likley the question you are about to ask has already been answered. Good luck with any future fishies!!

Strange that you say they can't be housed together because we checked with our fish shop who said that as long as you don't have two males together they would be fine. The fish lived together for about 8 months and it was only when we moved house that they became aggressive to each other. All very strange......

So far this forum has proved to be really useful we'll be sure to check on here for info on any new additions we plan to make.......
