Today I notices some stringy stuff hanging from one of my cichlids. It fell off and I haven't seen it again...there are no other symptoms and I think all is well. However, I am curious if it's possible, at this point, for my fish to get parasites. I put the initial batch of fish in the tank about 2 months ago. All of them have been extremely healthy. I then added a few more fish about a month ago...those too seem very healthy (the fish with the stringy stuff was from the initial batch). I have been finatical about my water. I do 30% water changes every 4-5 days. My readings are generally all zero...sometimes a little nitrate.

I had just assumed (until today) that if I don't add any more fish I'd be safe from parasites. Is this true or is it still possible? Where would they come from? Unfortunately I don't have a quarantine tank (yet). If I do have a sick fish can I treat the whole tank? One of them is carrying eggs. Would it be safe for her as well? Thanks!

It was, just didn't look nornmal. Much more clear than the usual color.

Sorry to bump this, but I still don't have an answer to my origional question. Anyone?

what have you been feeding them and how often. The color of poo depends not only on what you feed them but also how much/often. constipation can cause clear, mucousy poo. If there are no signs of flicking, rubbing, getting thin or bloated or spitting out food i wouldnt worry. Maybe cut back on the feeding a bit for now and watch the tank for other symptoms.
cheers
