Api make a product called Ammo-Lock - a liquid.
While it locks ammonia into a less toxic form to fish (ammonium?) it still keeps it available to the bacs unlike a another product of same name (but granules/powder/solid).

You will still get ammonia readings from your tests but your fish will be safer.
One word of warning though - after you pour out your measure of Ammo-Lock make sure you touch something to ground yourself otherwise you get a bit of a shock

if you are, then this is just like doing a fishless cycle but with plants which is bad.

ive got no algae fortunately, my nitrate test kit ran out so i think i should get a tap reading and then compensate for the TPN+ and then see if their is a result, there is detectable amounts of ammonia, but i guess thats down to the fact that my tank is full of slow growers (i know not a good idea) but a fish in cycle was my only option.
