Its a good news bad new sanarrio, the good news is i have a new pair of discus, that are laying now, the bad news is he's eating the eggs arrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I have another pair and the male will not fertalize the eggs, he prefers eating them, i hope its not going to happen all over again.

There a newly formed pair out of a group of 6 young, hopefull he will pull to in time and do his duty!

My brother has purchased 2 Discus today, how does he sex them?? -_- I was just wondering, since you have a mating pair :D

Thanx Claire x

Hopefully the discus will start to fertalize them. It used to take mine awhile befor they would stop eating them :S usually got me annoyed but was happy when i saw babies

good luck!

Sorry you can only tell the sex of discus when they spawn, (hint the female is the one laying sorry lol its a pain)

the only way of getting a pair is to buy about 6 young and hope you get a pair that will cost you about £120 + or you could buy a breeding pair but they will cost anything from £150 upwards depending on the strain.

I'm hoping so as well i have a pair now and the female is fine but the male will push the female away to eat them as she lays, he's more interested in food than fertilizing the egg's.

At one of my lfs, they sell discus from £40-£150 each, we went to another lfs, and they were selling 2 discus for £25, so thats where my brother got his from, all the fish we have ever got from there, have been in excellent condition....its a very nice place :)

So he got a good deal then? lol.... I was thinking of getting 2, when my new tank is established, but i dont know yet lol

..maybe got a good deal, but there is a difference between a "pair" of discus and 2 discus... even one male one female. They bond, and usually a "pair" refered to is a pair that have already mated (though not necessarily successfully raised young). These are £ x lots, whereas 2 discus will be a lot less.

I understand what you mean yes, and i didnt mean my brother had a mating pair, i was just observing, some of the prices that the lfs sell discus at, one near us sells £40 up per discus, and another lfs near us, sells 2 for £25 or £15 each....

Thanx Claire x :*

SInce the fish are young I would not worry about it much. Females mature faster then the males. If he is still eating the eggs 4 months from now then it is time to give up on him.

Good luck.

I've already given up on my pigeon blood male, i've nicknamed him jaffa lol.
He's seams more interested in food then women, i've moved them back to my main tank, with my young to see if a bit of competition would give him a kick up the arse! no joy!

I've been thinking moving him to another tank, and see if one of my up and coming young would pair up with her.

It can depend on the strain/colouration, some are harder to breed (heckled etc), i've seen a new strain of discus go for £65 each for a 2" fish in my lfs, but then again i,ve just bought THIS for £29.95 for a 4 1/2" fish.

Its been funny for me i,ve bought 2 cheap stunted fish because they where cheap, only for them to have a growth spurt and become stunning adults.

My tanks go mad i have 3 females laying

I've just bought her for £30, she's only been in the tank for a week and she's laying already.

I've two young discus left now a red Mellon and a pigeon blood, which will be the one to pair up with the new female, god its starting to sound like an episode of some prime time soap lol.

i just discovered laid eggs yesterday morning so i know found out that i have a female disucs as well. unfortunately, the parents were nibbling on the eggs later that night so i put a mesh barrier. i've been told that this happens to first time parents and just let it run its course. they'll eventually know how to be parents.

I have also found the prices of Discus to have a large gap between shops, at Mere Park (on A41) which is part of Maidenhead Aquatics they have Discus from £15 - £50 depending on what type... Blues generally around the £15 mark and Snakeskins at the more expensive £35 - £50 mark, however at another place locally to me they sell Blues at £60 & Snakeskins at £120. I have never kept Discus before generally cos i dont have the room as i already have 4 tropical tanks & to house 4-6 Discus i can imagine id need at least another 400l tank (400l being the largest i have and thats a fair size to put in a room)... and even then i can guess that 400l wouldnt be large enough for 6 fully grown Discus.

Maybe i need a specialist room just for fish, only problem is that i like to have a nice community tank in my living area.

400litres problly plenty big enough -most reckon on 10 gallons (US) per discus, with a minimum of 50 gallon tank (some people say 30, but 50 minimum is easiest) - so a 60 US gallon tank would be OK.

At the moment i have 7 discus in a 66gal, which by the standard guide line of 10gal per fish is a little cramped, but they are all doing fine with regular maintenance.

I'm moving them to a bigger tank soon as i finish it.

The quality of the discus can demand a higher price the, a fuller round body perk fins and vivid colour.
