I went to see Maiden last night and Trivium were supporting. I will discuss Maiden and Life and Death in a minute, but first:
Trivium were awful. I have never heard such crap in all my life. They had no direction to their music and every song just meandered without any direction and sounded identical to the last one. Only good thing on the set was the singer getting all upset because people threw a bottle of urine at them. I hope to god they never play Reading because they would be showering in it and once more threatening that their big friends would beat up whoever threw it (oooh, that's so hard and Thrash Metal(!))
I have been to a few smaller metal concerts this year and I can say, without doubt, that Trivium are the worst band (support or main) I have had the misfortune to listen to. I even found myself enjoying some death metal as it was live a couple of weeks ago, but was massively relieved when Trivium finally left the stage last night. They had such little connection with the crowd the largest circle pit they got had all of 10 people in it. All That Remains managed a pit at least 3 times that size in the Astoria when supporting Dragonforce last week.
Anyway, on to Maiden...
I was disappointed with Maiden's set. They played every single song off of the new album without a single old song for the first part of the show. We then got 5 older songs (Fear of the Dark, Hallowed be Thy Name, Iron Maiden, 2 Minutes to Midnight and one I forget). The place literally exploded when they finally played an older song. I have never seen a band play an entire album straight at a gig, and certainly not one with the sort of back catalogue that Maiden has.
All in all an ok gig, but I really expected more from Maiden. It effectively excluded anyone who was a fan but hadn't bought the newest album for most of the show. I was impressed with Bruce keeping the crowd entertained when they had to shut off the sound for 10 minutes after a power cable caught fire backstage. Never thought I would hear a chorus of "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" at a Maiden concert.
The new album seemed all right (have only heard live), but every song started by sounding as if it could be Afraid to Shoot Strangers and almost every song had the same anti-war theme. Certainly not the best of Maiden as a trawl through their older live albums will show.
