Well, before anything you need to decide what you want to keep, then you can get the details on the species (different cichlids can have different requirements). If you need help deciding perhaps you can lay out the details of the tank you intend them for and what you were hoping to keep them with, if anything.

im only keeping cichlids that protect their fry until the grow up and easy to sex.and mate only every 3-4 months

No cichlid spawns every 3-4 months, its every 3-4 weeks. If you want them to spawn every couple of months then take out the female everytime the spawn then put her back in when you want a new batch. All cichlid look after there young with there life so theres no worrys there, but it depends on what cichlid you want. For a pair of acaras you need about a 45g because of the room for the fry, for an oscar you will need somthing well over 100g. If you wish to keep breeding them then you need another tank to put the fry in so this way they will have room to breed rather than kill the first batch off to make room for the new ones, and also so the first batch doesnt attack the new batch.

I'd seriously suggest you look into raising some other fish. I don't mean to sound as if I am flaming but imho if you lack the desire to perform basic research on fish before posting a general question like that you should not keep them. Cichlids are not a beginner fish. Fish stores around the country are inundated everyday with people who call and say they can't keep their this or their that because its too big or too messy or to mean... You know nothing of cichlids, not even bothered to perform basic research and you want someone to tell you what fish to go buy.. bah.. no way should anybody tell you anything except to stay away from cichlids or do a lot of research.

emm i onli noe bout the africans

Asking questions before getting fish first is good , and could be considered research .

here's a little more you can read , as freddy said , you need a fish to start with if anyone can help you out .

There are many , many species of cichlid , some do actually make good beginner fish , while others should be absolutely avoided by the novice .
