hi im new to this forum and i came ere cos the over forum was rubbish and no one answered me lolo. wat i reeli want to ask is, what are the two dangly things on the bottom of the gourami for, they always seem to feel the glass for sum reason !? and also can any one give me an insight to the gourami world and tell me wat is interesting to know bout them. thanks

they use the feelers to identify each other, that is what i was told. the other i was told is that if you wish to add a female you must add at least two for every male, because otherwise the male will bully the female, sometimes to death. but on the whole theyre just a really nice fish

There are mainly 2 types of gourami sold, Threespotted gourami which include the blue, opaline, gold, and others variants that dont all have threespots. The dwarf gourami is also sold in many varieties such as the neon blue, turquoise, cobalt, fire red and so on although they can be more beautiful hey aren't as hardy as hey used to be because of inbreeding so it is best to buy from a tank were there are no sick or deformed ones and buy ones your LFS has had for a week to 2 weeks so that all the weakones will be gone. Unfortunetely they dont usually have females because they are less brightly colored (and also have rounded dorsal ins) so it is best to get one male. Dwarfs can be peaceful or aggressive but are more usually the first. Threespot males are very aggressive especailly if they do not have a mate. They also will not necessarily take a mate. You should try to buy a male and two females when they are very young and if the male pairs with one of the females remove the other female. They tend to grow to at most 6 inches while dwarfs can grow to 2 inches. There are many other gourami's, kissing, pearl, chocolate, banded, sparkling and more that you can read about in the fish index under labrynth fish.
