I don't have much experience with live plants other than killing them! :*) I think most of my past problems were probably due to inadequate light. I was wondering though if it would be possible to use a 10 gallon tank for the sole purpose of growing java moss and if so, how would I go about doing it. It would be a fishless tank, would it need a filter, how much light would it need, would it need substrate, cO2 etc...

I'd like to be able to harvest some of the java moss for the occasions when I have a pregnant swordtail in a maternity tank and need some fry cover.

light, water, little filter (to keep the water moving), rocks to tie moss to, string to tie them with

its not hard growing moss

Though moss can grow better or worse under various conditions . . . it depends if you want fast vs. slow growth and stringy vs. compact growth, and a bunch of other things . . . not that anyone can really control how moss grows but. *shrug*

you can put java moss in a glass bowl of aquarium water and leave it by the window and it will still grow.

no substrate needed just light (low/medium light is fine) and nitrate which will already be in your water. dont fertalise at all.

if you spread it out a bit and untangle the strands it will grow faster (more surface area in the light)
